The Sweet Taste of Victory??

Everyone seems to be cashing in on VCU's success in making it to the Final Four. Take Kroger for example. Kroger has black and yellow striped cupcakes and doughnuts. Although I have to say that I was captivated with their pull-apart cupcakes in the shape of a basketball. They even have VCU creme-filled doughnuts. So what does victory taste like? Apparently sweet.

(Side Note= Krispy Kreme makes a mean basketball doughnut, too!)

Re-purpose Dryer Sheets

Here's a simple way to re-purpose dryer sheets... Real Simple suggests giving your shower door a wipe down with a new or used dryer sheet after use to keep soap scum from building up. I don't think it's practical to do this everyday (not to mention you'd be drying an awful lot of clothes!), but why not give your dryer sheets another purpose before tossing them?

Chocolate Bunnies

Easter's on it's way and Hershey's has a new chocolate bunny, Snapsy, that puts an end to an old problem. Think about it... there's a delicious, smooth, hollow, chocolate rabbit in your Easter basket, but as soon as you take so much as a nibble off of his ear... the whole thing crumbles. Or a nice solid chocolate bunny is waiting for you, but you nearly chip a tooth trying to get a morsel. Enter Hershey's new creation, Snapsy. Snapsy has scored marks so that you can effortlessly break off snack-size pieces. Genius!

It's Better to Look Good Than to Feel Good...

I absolutely love my pair of black patent leather stilettos! They might be somewhat impractical for everyday wear, but they come out of their little box on occasion. The Richmond-Times Dispatch had an article today saying many of the products on the market that promise to make high heels more comfortable, offered little support. I stick with my go to Band Aid Blister Block Friction Stick (right) to prevent blisters. The article recommended picking heels that are 3 inches or less and not wearing them everyday. However... if there's a cute pair of heels calling my name, I'll listen!

Ready for a Vacation??

Now that Spring has officially arrived, it's hard to believe that Summer is just around the corner. Self Magazine noted the research done at Tilburg University, finding that planning a trip causes people to feel a swell of excitement (even if it's still months away). So put that vacay on your calendar and start building some anticipation, all while brightening your mood!

Cake Pops

I'm not sure why I haven't already discovered these, but Starbucks has these new "cake pops". They caught my eye while visiting tonight.

Coming in 3 different flavors (Birthday Cake, Rocky Road, and Tiramisu), they'll only set you back 170 calories each, but are surprising indulgent. It's like eating cake on a stick! I think they're 2 for $2.50, but I'm not positive because Jason treated! We got the Birthday Cake Pops and they come in these fun little individual boxes. The chocolate is smooth and the inside is kinda soft, but the combo compliments each other well. Just don't get too carried away... there is a stick inside after all.

Peeps!

Who knew that Peeps could be more entertaining that just going a tad too long in the microwave?? The Washington Post hosts an annual Peep Diorama Contest. The deadline just past for entries this year, but you can view some of last year's top selections. Apparently some people take their Peeps very seriously!

Movie Munchies

Heading to the theater to catch a movie sometime soon? Shape Magazine had some suggestions. Take note of some concessions that may not be as unhealthy as you might think.

- Small Popcorn= 1/2 a bag has 225 calories (without the butter) and has filling and good-for-you whole grains.

- Milk Duds= 1/2 a box has 170 calories, plus the caramel is chewy so you can't devour them too quickly.

- Hot Dog= Shockingly it has 210 calories and is a good source of protein. (An average dog can pack 19 grams of fat though!)

- Icee Slushie= 16 ounces has 220 calories (and no fat).

Not So Rewarding Receipts...

I'm notorious for holding onto receipts... for big purchases, gifts, purchases that have not cleared yet, etc... I'm sure that lots of people do. There is a rising concern about the BPA (a chemical linked to cancer) in these little strips of paper. Through contact with the skin (your hands), the chemical can seep into your bloodstream. Supposedly BPA can also rub off on other objects. (Think about how easy it is for receipts to take over your wallet or purse!) So you might want to put receipts you do need to keep in a separate place (like an envelope). It is recommended that you wash your hands with soap and water after contact with receipts.

Swipe Your Cart

I've come across this info in a couple of different places, so I feel like it's worth repeating... Have you noticed how some retailers offer disinfecting wipes to clean off your shopping cart? Don't hesitate to give your cart a good once over. Both Prevention and Shape Magazines report that research studies have found "73 percent of shopping carts are contaminated with bacteria" mostly -gasp- coming from fecal matter! It would be in your best interest to generously wipe down the handle and child seat with an antibacterial wipe. If the stores you frequent don't provide them, stash a travel pack in your purse.

Protect Your Purse

Have you ever realized that one of the most dangerous places to sit your purse is on your kitchen counter? Not because your counter is loathing with bacteria, but because your precious handbag is likely to have picked up all sorts of germs in it's travels and therefore happy to relocate them where you prepare your food. Be diligent about disinfecting your counters, but also wary about where you sit your purse. Consider investing in something that has been dubbed a "purse valet". It's a small hook that discretely sits atop of a table and holds your purse by the handle, preventing it from sitting on the floor. You can find one like this in a number of different places, like boutiques and stores like Kohl's.

Laundry Saver

It's a mystery how socks can go into the laundry hamper as a pair, and yet come out of the dryer solo. Invest in some large mesh bags to corral socks and undies. Dirty clothes go in the bag before hitting the washer and come out together. Get one for each member of the family to make putting laundry away a breeze. This way socks have no chance of finding their way into the "black hole" of the dryer or winding up in your husband's pant leg.

Check out bags like these from The Container Store for only $5 each.

The Value of Digital Coupons

I did a little homework beforehand and saved a pretty penny this week at Kroger. Click away and load their digital coupons to your Kroger card. For example...

- Charmin Toilet Paper- 12 double rolls are on sale for $5.99. Get a $3.00 off coupon digitally and then pair it with a $.25 off manufacturer coupon (which doubles to $.50). Essentially you pay $2.50 for 12 double rolls of toilet paper (or 24 regular rolls... however you want to think about it).

- Old Spice Deodorant- One is on sale for $1.99. We used a $1 off any 2 coupon and a digital $1 off coupon, so we paid about $1 a piece.

- Tide- A 32 load bottle is on sale for $5.99. There is a $.50 off digital coupon and there was a $.35 off coupon in the paper from Sunday (which doubled). We really saved when Jason inadvertently gave the cashier a coupon that got your a free Tide Stain Release product when you get a 75 oz bottle of detergent (which we did not). The cashier rang it in anyway, so that was another $3.99 off. So as far as I'm concerned we got it for about $.80!!

- Venus Pro-Skin Razor- Here's the real money-saver. There is a $3.00 off digital coupon, plus there was a $5.00 off coupon in this week's paper. The razor is on sale for $8.99. Obviously other savvy shoppers have done the math and scooped them up (seeing as they would pay less than a dollar). We might try again to see if we can't score the same deal. Wal-Mart has this razor on sale, but you won't get that extra $3.00 off digital coupon.

Happy Savings!!

Don't Pass on the Ketchup

Do you ever feel guilty about throwing those extra, lonely, little ketchup packets away that get tossed into the bottom of your take-out bag? Here's a solution: stick them in the freezer and use them as tiny ice packs for small bumps and bruises. Their petite size is beneficial for kids, as well as those times when a big ice pack (or frozen bag of peas) seems like overkill.

I'd stay away from the "classier" versions of packets (like the ones Chick-fil-a uses). I don't know how effective they would be. (But they are pretty snazzy!!)
